This class will deal with the process of teaching woodwind instruments and musical ideas to beginners and intermediates. It will also provide insight into ones own strengths and weakness as performing musicians. The class sessions will mostly involve hands on experience. We will spend little time talking in class, but rather go through the same kind of experiences that our students might possibly encounter. Areas to be investigated include the following: developing awareness of the breathing process in playing a wind instrument, developing freedom in movement and body awareness (Alexander Technique and Chi-Kung will be discussed as well as some dance techniques), how to introduce an instrument to beginning students, guidance to musical expression for all levels. All activities will be geared towards an improvement of ones listening ability.
You are required to find a student to teach your given instrument for the semester. Once you begin taping you may not change students.
