本課程以概述方式呈現，結合周遭時事與現象，期使學生理解台灣由日據時期至黨外時期之左派思潮與白色恐怖，培養學生之專業興趣和以古鑑今之能力，並進一步提昇學生反省批判與獨立思考之精神。This course is presented in an overview format, combined with current events and phenomena around them. It aims to enable students to understand the leftist ideological trend and white terror in Taiwan from the Japanese occupation period to the non-party period, cultivate students' professional interests and the ability to learn from the past, and further enhance students' ability to learn from the past. 在中國現代化的歷程中，民初以來，國共鬥爭乃是主流。台灣在蔣介石政權退守之後，事實上也未能脫離國共互爭的時代大脈動。惟因光復之後，中共台灣省工會蔡孝乾(蔡乾)被捕，並且投降、招供，致使共黨在台組織全盤瓦解。復以韓戰之後，美蘇爭霸之世界大勢已定，蔣介石政權在台灣成為美國堅定盟友，在美國支持下，共黨左派勢力被搜捕殆盡。因此，左派在台灣政治發展上，似乎被遺忘了。但是，相對於美國主導的西敏寺民主，左派永遠是台灣政治發展上另一重要選項，實不容忽視。而蔣介石在捕殺共黨份子，所造成的「白色恐怖」，事實上是以左派為對象，而遠過於以台獨為對象。職是，在台灣民主及人權史上，探討「白色恐怖」如不能免，那麼探討左派應更為焦點。
In the process of China's modernization, the struggle between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party has been the mainstream since the early Republic of China. After the retreat of Chiang Kai-shek's regime, Taiwan was actually unable to escape the great pulse of the era of conflict between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. However, after the liberation, Cai Xiaoqian (Cai Qian) of the Taiwan Provincial Trade Union of the Communist Party of China was arrested, surrendered and confessed, which led to the complete collapse of the Communist Party's organization in Taiwan. After the resumption of the Korean War, the general trend of the world's struggle for hegemony between the United States and the Soviet Union was determined. Chiang Kai-shek's regime became a staunch ally of the United States in Taiwan. With the support of the United States, the leftist forces of the Communist Party were rounded up. Therefore, the left seems to have been forgotten in Taiwan's political development. However, compared to the Westminster democracy led by the United States, the left will always be another important option for Taiwan's political development and cannot be ignored. The "white terror" caused by Chiang Kai-shek's hunt for communists actually targeted leftists rather than Taiwan independence. The reason is that in the history of Taiwan's democracy and human rights, if the discussion of "white terror" is unavoidable, then the discussion of the left should be more focused.
