This is a task-based course to provide basic linguistic and non-linguistic training on simultaneous interpretation. Students are to learn basic interpreting skills and will acquire higher language proficiency, both in English and Chinese. The course covers the basic skills for simultaneous interpreting, e.g. shadowing, lagging, numbering, a quick analytical capacity, and clear delivery. At the same time, students learn to deal with the pressure and work ethics accompanying the profession. Students will be expected to deepen their understanding of socio-economic conditions, cultural differences, historical developments, and current events related to the targeted language. They will also broaden their general knowledge and views in different topical areas, e.g. culture, politics, science and technology, finance and economy, and environment and energy.
