This studio aims to introduce graduate students an approach from Asian eco-cultural urbanism in planning research. The design capability needed to find innovative and sustainable strategies based on natural and cultural principles for the next lap of community development will be emphasised. The studio has the following objectives:
1. Performing Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) early in site analysis of the designing stage;
2. Integrate and apply Life’s Principles in sustainable eco-cultural development and design;
3. Critically develop new system design based on local organisms; and
4. Seek radical simplicity in community planning from a cultural repertoire* of vernacular architecture and settlement/regional ecology based on Life’s Principles, Biological Strategies and System Design concepts.
* Definition: “the complete list or supply of skills, devices, or ingredients used in a particular field, occupation, or practice.” (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/repertoire accessed 13 June 2014)This studio aims to introduce graduate students an approach from Asian eco-cultural urbanism in planning research.
Through historical review of actual cases of domestic urban and rural or island settlements, current situation visits, resident interviews, community participation, spatial analysis, issue discussions, comprehensive diagnosis, development positioning, planning goals, development strategies, outline plans, planning configurations, and details Design, etc., and prepare the best plan for the redevelopment of the study case to provide a development blueprint for relevant local administrators to engage in urban and rural space transformation and construction. Through the practical operation of construction-education cooperation, students can more truly experience the social structure and spatial structure characteristics of urban and rural areas, and become more immersed in conceiving practical models for sustainable urban and rural development and overall community construction.
