This course is a required course for the in-service Master of Public Affairs program. Its content mainly introduces various methods of qualitative research (Qualitative research) in social science research, including interview method, observation method, focus group interview method, content analysis method and archival data analysis method, etc. Logical Positivism is the philosophical foundation of science. Therefore, there are two basic elements that constitute scientific knowledge. One is validity, that is, logical relevance. Second, reliability, that is, empirical verifiability. This course aims to introduce how to use scientific methods to conduct qualitative research in social sciences on the basis of validity and reliability, including concept creation, hypothesis formulation, model construction, and data acquisition and analysis. etc., with the aim of equipping students with professional analysis and academic research abilities related to social sciences.
"What kind of questions should be asked? Which aspects should be observed? What data should be collected? What methods should be used to collect data? How to interpret the data? How to integrate it? How to make a judgment?"
How do people who study social sciences understand social phenomena? To sort out the complex connections? How to give a logical explanation? Understanding social phenomena must proceed within some strictly defined frame of reference. Among them, in addition to relevant theoretical guidance, a set of scientific methods are needed to collect and analyze data to obtain useful information.
Simply put, social science research method is a process of seeking answers to questions, and it is also a training in logical thinking. Social science research method is not only a method and a tool, but also a thinking framework for our pursuit of knowledge. In other words, we systematically use these methods to understand so-called "facts." This course on Social Science Research Law hopes to achieve the following goals:
1. Understand the purpose and importance of social science research.
2. Discuss the relationship between theory and research.
3. Understand the role of survey structure design.
4. Application of observation methods.
5. Mastery of data analysis methods.
