Taught in English

Course Target

Einbildungskraft (power of imagination) is generally translated as imagination. It is not only a necessary basic condition for artistic creation, but also an indispensable cognitive and representational ability for philosophical thinking.
After Kant discussed imaginative power in the First and Third Critiques, he set off an upsurge in the study of imaginative power in the 19th century. In addition to the field of philosophy, both anthropology and psychology have many research works on imaginative power. In particular, the research on imaginative power in psychology once led the research on imaginative power in all walks of life. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that Heidegger introduced the main axis of research on imaginative power back to the field of philosophy.
This course will focus on the discussion of imagination in the first edition of Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason", supplemented by "Critique of Judgment". Since Kant's discussion of imaginative power in the Critique of Pure Reason leaves room for interpretation, contemporary philosophers have come up with different interpretations, which are mainly divided into three directions. The first is Heidegger's argument that Kant's imaginative power (imagination) is based on subjectivity, which is currently the most influential. The second is an interpretation based on epistemology based on the Neo-Kantian school and British and American analysis, such as the German Cassirer and the British Strawson; the third is based on reflection on the first two interpretations, trying to return to Kant's text for interpretation and deconstruction, for example, the contemporary scholar Sarah Gibbons and Matthias Wunsch.
Due to the limited class time this semester, this course focuses on the discussion of Kant's texts. We will further understand the relevant interpretations of Heidegger and Strawson to understand Kant's philosophical content about conception (imagination) and its importance to philosophical thinking.
