Course Target

If civilization requires us to grovel, then I will show you the pride of barbarism." "Civilization", together with "barbarism", appears in "Sediq. On top of the movie poster of "Balay". "Civilization" also appears in the "Constitution of the People's Republic of China" and the society's "Please Use Civilization to Convince Me" (Why Why don't you accept my civilized persuasion? ) in the title text of the book. What is "civilization"? What does it mean to be a civilized person? Questions like this are included in the above quotations. With different answers, different contexts, and different civilizations. The "Civilization Process Theory" introduced in this course was created by the German Jewish sociologist Norbert Elias (1897-1990). In his view, civilization is a long-term process; civilized people are modern people (starting from Western Europeans) A self-image based on the civilized standards in the process. As both "sons of Western civilization" (to borrow Max Weber's words), Elias wants to ask How can we (Westerners) regard ourselves as civilized while viewing our ancestors and many other foreign races of our time as barbarians? What brings about civilization? Through a semester of classic reading, we hope that students can further reflect on themselves and reflect on their own thoughts from the outside in, through academic and critical learning. Think contemporary. The course objectives are: 1. Through studying classics, get in touch with the observation and research methods of the social phenomenon of civilization process 2. Reflect on oneself and contemporary behavioral standards by reflecting on the distinction between civilization and barbarism.
