關於如「文明」是什麼？怎麼樣才算是一個文明的人呢？等等這類的問題，以上的引文都有
著不同的答案、不同的脈絡、不同的文明。
本課程所介紹的「文明化過程理論」，創始自德國猶太裔社會學家Norbert Elias
(1897-1990)。依他之見，文明是一個長期的過程；文明的人是現代人（從西歐人開始）依過
程中的文明標準而有的自我圖像。同為「西方文明之子」 （借Max Weber語），Elias要問的
是何以我們（西方人）能視自己為文明而視祖先與同時代諸多異族為野蠻？文明何以致之？
透過一學期的經典研讀，期許同學們能夠由外而內，由學問思辨的學習進一步反思自身、反
思當代。
是以課程目標為：
1. 透過研讀經典，接觸文明化過程此一社會現象的觀察與研究方法
