The goal of this course in the fall semester is to equip the students with basic analytical techniques for tonal music. We will start from Chapters 1 to 5 of Douglas Green's book, which include the concept of form, shape, genre, various types of phrase and phrase combination, cadential patterns. Then the survey will expand to the standard forms as One-Part Form (prelude, etude, character pieces…), Binary (including rounded binary), Ternary and Multi-Section Forms as Rondo. Additional music excerpts from the Classical and early Romantic eras will serve as the primary music sources in this fall semester besides the ones provided in the textbook. The goal of this course in the fall semester is to equip the students with basic analytical techniques for tonal music. The end goal of this class is to equip you with the basic analytical techniques in every hierarchy. We will cover the first five chapters of Douglas Green’s book, introducing the basic structural units to the phrases in combo. After midterm we will apply these basic techniques to the study of the simpler forms, roughly in Chapters 6 & 8, and make to the form of rondo towards the end of this semester.
