藝術在社會中的發展，並非是純粹美學的課題，而是涉及許多社會條件、文化背景、物質文明的基礎，才得以創造出各時期的藝術結晶。近代西方藝術社會學的知識形成，是一點一滴從傳統哲學領域中的美學之社會學轉向，以及傳統藝術史之社會學轉向中逐漸累積而成的：法國藝術社會學家N. Heinich曾將藝術社會學的知識發展歷程，依世代的分野劃分為三階段：(一)考察藝術與社會的對立與互動關係(art and society);(二)不再視藝術與社會為對立面，而是將藝術放入社會之中，研究藝術發展的社會脈絡(art in society); (三)將藝術界本身視為一個社會來考察(art as society)。本課程著重探討第二階段的藝術社會史脈絡，不同於傳統藝術史偏重於藝術家及其藝術風格的介紹，本課程在論述各時期的藝術風格之餘，更致力於探討各時代的社會背景、價值觀，以及社會制度與社會組織等條件，對於藝術風格所帶來的影響，以及藝術文化對於社會產生的衝擊與效應。本學期的課程由西方的藝術史開展，並遠溯及史前時期與埃及藝術，至十七世紀巴洛克藝術為止。本課程是系列藝術社會史課程的首部曲，下學期將從洛可可之後盛行的新古典主義開始探討其社會史，並逐步邁向當代藝術的社會史研究，下學期的課程將探討巴洛克藝術以降的藝術社會史。此一課程設計，旨在讓有志於研習藝術社會學的同學們，能同時打下藝術史、社會史與社會學的根基，並在將來深入學習藝術社會學理論，考時察當代藝術社會現象，能擁有紮實的知識基礎與相關學養。The development of art in society is not a purely aesthetic subject, but involves many social conditions, cultural backgrounds, and the basis of material civilization, which enables the creation of artistic crystallization in each period.
