What is your background in coming to Taiwan? How did they come to Taiwan? What kind of work do they do in Taiwan? What kind of investigation, mapping and understanding do they have of Taiwan? What important impact and significance did their coming to Taiwan have on Taiwan’s modern and modern history?
2. Enhance elective students’ understanding of the relationship between Taiwan and Europe, especially the relationship between Taiwan and Germany.
3. Cultivate elective students’ international outlook and world view.
In the study of Taiwan's foreign relations in modern times, experts and scholars at home and abroad have focused more on the relationship between Taiwan and the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan, and rarely discussed the relationship between Taiwan and "Germany". Studies are even rarer. For many years, the author has been engaged in research on the topic of "Early Sino-German Relations." In the process of combing through historical materials, I discovered that as early as the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Germans came to Taiwan and had great influence on Taiwan. They paid great attention to neighboring islands. Some of them carried out missionary work, some surveyed and mapped Taiwan, and even recorded what they saw and heard in Taiwan. These records not only reveal the good natural environment and rich products of Taiwan in the early days, but also reveal the situation of our ancestors who were struggling one after another, overcoming obstacles, operating in a miserable manner, and dealing with the indigenous people, the Dutch and the Spanish. These records are also important information for understanding the participation of modern Europeans, especially the "Germans", in the colonial rule, trade, development and missionary work of the Dutch and British in Taiwan during the Age of Discovery.
The main content of this course is an introduction to the records and understanding of these Germans in Taiwan, as well as the analysis and discussion of the German government's covetousness of Taiwan in the second half of the 19th century, because these records and understanding not only confirm that in modern times, Europe With the spirit of adventure and adversity, people traveled across the oceans to East Asia and It quickly pushed Taiwan from the border and primitive state of mainland China into the world's economic and colonial system, and first became the center or transshipment station for the Dutch in East Asia. It also made Taiwan a strategic target for various countries to compete for. The region has become a meeting place for modern Western powers in East Asia. Due to the intervention of European forces, Taiwan was also dominated and exploited by them. However, at the same time, stimulated by European culture and maritime culture, Taiwan slowly broke away from its primitive and closed state, and began to modernize and become the East-West The focus of great powers' covetousness. This is a part of Taiwan’s modern history and is worth understanding by students.
