This course is designed to give students an opportunity to reach a higher level of English reading and speaking ability. Students will read and discuss several short stories with surprise endings. Students will read a new short story each week and will participate in small-group activities related to the story of the week. These activities will include: guessing the surprise ending of the story, creating a new ending in either written or oral form to present to the class, comparing diferent student-generated endings to the same story, and other activities at the direction of the teacher. The discussions and activities will take place in a comfortable and relaxed environment which is student-friendly. During class discussions and participation, there will be no wrong answers, just varied opinions. The total experiences in the class will strengthen students ability to read, write, listen, and speak in an English language environment.
The exams are the acting component of the course. For the exams, students will form small groups and will receive a short story without the ending. They will work cooperatively to write a play script based on the story line but with a surprise ending of their own creation. Students will then perform their short plays in which they portray the characters in the story and continue the story line with unexpected twists and turns (surprises) in the plot. For the midterm exam, the plays will be performed live in front of the class in a theater setting. The final exam plays will be performed and recorded on a DVD for class viewing at the end of the semester. The entire class will watch both the live plays and the final exam DVDs and students will be graded on their individual performances. These plays will entertain as well as educate the audiences.
