This course offers an introduction to the music of the long 19th century. We will study major forms, genres, and styles of the music in these periods in relation to its cultural context, including major political, religious, and artistic trends.
Weekly assignments listed in this syllabus refer to both the excerpts from various chapters in our textbook (reading assignment) and the works included in the excerpts (listening assignment). We will use catalogues and digital archives such as Grove Music Online and Naxos to complement our textbook. In addition to our discussion of the history of Romantic music, we will discuss the principles of academic writing, including correct ways of citing our sources, the idea of intellectual property, as well as the definition of plagiarism.This course is an introduction to Romantic music. Topics discussed include major contemporary musical forms, styles, musical structures, and the relationship between music and the political, cultural, and social background of the time.
The textbook for this course is Burkholder/Grout/Palisca, A History of Western Music (8th edition), including the CDs and music scores (Norton Anthology) attached to this book. Weekly assignments include reading specific chapters of the textbook and listening to the repertoire mentioned therein.
