藉講演、視聽教材、野外觀察與實習，使學生對植物的結構,生理調節, 微生物及台灣生物多樣性有初步之認識。此課程開設之目的，在使所有生物系之學生，不論其未來學術興趣是分子生物、遺傳工程、生態保育或甚至是跨學科之領域，皆能因對生物之多樣性有充分認識，而能對生命現象有完整的認知。藉對地球上現生物種大尺度的掌握，而能中肯的了解生命現象，不會只將對生命之了解或認知侷限於分子或物理化學層次之間，過渡簡約化對生命之認知，以致自我限制了將來的發展。Through lectures, audio-visual materials, field observations and internships, students have a preliminary understanding of plant structure, physiological regulation, microbes and Taiwan's biodiversity.
