Medical Ethics

Course Target

The rapid advancement of contemporary biotechnology and medical care has brought about major changes in human life. For example, the average life expectancy of Taiwanese women in the 40 years of the Republic of China was 56.33 years old, and has been extended to 83.62 years in 104 years. Or as in the first half of the twentieth century, most Americans died at home, but in 1987, 75% of the American deaths were in hospitals or long-lit centers, and now more.         It’s fascinating to live longer, until there is no medical care at the end of the day, but are these changes good? "An old principal has lived on a respirator for seven or eight years and suffers from ineffective medical treatment. The children are retired after receiving 18% interest from the principal. The longer they live, the more they will not let the elderly rest in peace..." It seems that if we do not have the right to refuse medical treatment, it may not be a good thing to live for a long time. Come again, consider this report: "The previous day, six death row inmates, one of them hoped to "donate organs" to redeem, but the Ministry of Justice officially stated at the press conference that in the future, no more prisoners will be allowed to donate. It has caused a rebound in the medical profession..." If we remove the organ, we are still not sure that the prisoner has died in the brain. The hospital where the death row is donated is suspected of picking up human organs. However, it is really not very good to refuse the donation of death shackles and see the doctors who save the lives of patients and the patients who are looking forward to living.         People have a day of life and death. Have you ever thought that you or your family may encounter these problems one day? Advances in biotechnology and medical care give hope to "can continue to live," but there are also many ethical and legal controversies. In addition to pre-death decisions and organ donation, medical ethics also includes these topics: abortion, euthanasia, medical choices, medical resource allocation, and the establishment of a human biological database. This course will introduce why these issues are controversial, what are the implications of different positions, how philosophers analyze these positions, and whether these analyses are justified. We look at these issues from a personal perspective, such as being a patient or a health care worker, and a social policy. Through this course, you can also think about these important issues of personal life and national policy: What kind of position should you take? Do you have any reason to support your claim?
